Dell Studio 15 Laptop

Laptops have always fascinated every gadget freak. My comp had become old enough (3 years old) to be replaced and decided to buy a laptop instead. After a bit of search and help from friends, decided to get hold 0f the DELL Studio 15 Laptop. Even though Lenovo y430 had to offer a blackberry i decided to stick on to the DELL Studio 15 Laptop since they were offering a much better configuration at the same price. Had to do some minor tweaking to get my required configuration (P8600, 7200 rpm performance hard drive, 9 battery pack, back lit keyboard, Vista 64 bit, silver palm rest, blue tooth mouse and 1 year complete cover)

This is what the package looked like before opening it up.
Was expecting a huge surprise when i opened the package and wasn't disappointed. The package opened up to show "DELL yours is here STUDIO". Its was a complete turn around from the external looks and a very positive one which someone can look forward to.

The upper deck of the box contained all the installation Cd's plus the addition hardware which included the power supply, blue tooth mouse and a noise cancellation ear buds

The laptop placed carefully in the box looks more than just inviting. Had to literally stop myself from tearing apart everything to get to the laptop

Some Cool Features

The matte finish adds a touch of completeness to laptop. Its not too flashy, but do really feel proud to carry it around.

The LCD screen is a beauty. Not being accustomed to the wide screen, its really fascinating to look left and right to see the entire LCD screen.

The back lit keyboard adds to the beauty of the laptop.

The charger comes with a super cool blue LED. Does let your laptop look boring and adds value to the same.

Regular feature include 320 GB harddisk, 3 GB RAM (DDR 2), Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8600(2.4 GHz/1066 FSB/3MB Cache), Dell wireless 370 blue tooth mini card, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 (256 MB), Slot load DVD, TrueLife display(1366 * 768) with integrated 2 Mega Pixel Web cam, Intel(R) WiFi link 5100 (802.11 a/g/n), IDT high definition audio codec, HDMI port, Facial recognition, Dell online backup 2 GB.

It always feels good to have got something worth your money and it just happened to be one of the best deals have got so far. Special thanks to my friend Bhavya (Insides Sales Accounts Manager, Dell India Pvt Ltd, bhavya_g@dell.com) for helping me choose a good configuration and in getting a very good deal for the same.

No hardware purchase comes without a few issues and i too ended up facing a few.

Delivery of the package by courier services was a huge let down. They don't call up, but expect you to be at your place at the time of delivery with a short notice of 30 minutes before arrival. Super fast, efficient and follow a 3 stage procedure (Lets call it the ADD procedure) Arrive , Dump and Depart. All this within a record time of 8 minutes.

The wait for getting the laptop was pathetically long. These were the sequence of events that followed the purchase of the laptop
Stage 1: Payment for the laptop done on March 5th
Stage 2: Estimated delivery date given by dell as 14th March
Stage 3: On the 14th the site gets updated with no delivery time lines set. it states "To be advised. Please check this site at a later time"
Stage 4: After one more week the laptop is still under production. After a few respectable mails sent across i finally get the reply stating they are sorry for the inconvenience caused along with the terms and conditions of the delivery.
Stage 5: The revised estimated date for delivery set to 30th March
Stage 6: On the 28th i get a call saying the laptop will be delivered in 30 minutes. Enquired with the courier guys if i can come and take the delivery. They were very happy to hear that and gave me a remote location in the city, at least 30 miles from home. Decided against it and asked my friendly neighbour to take the delivery. The courier guys followed the ADD process to their best extent.

Overall:
Pros: A very good laptop with quite a lot of features worth your money.
Cons: Noisy slot load DVD. Vista hogs RAM (no option of downgrading to XP), facial recognition software recognizes faces once in blue moon (Am assured that nobody else can log in for sure). Systems get heated soon. Laptop is a bit bulky.

Vista really hogs up RAM. Dont downgrade to XP but remove Vista from root and put XP, i.e., Format ur C:\ and Install XP with Boot CD.
